I think I first came across Tim Navis’s work via one of the image aggregator sites: Ffffound, Buamai et al. I make a pilgrimage to those for quick hits of visual inspiration on an almost daily basis, and every now and again I’ll hit upon work that chimes with me instantly. That’s how I ended up at Navis’s website & blog, where he showcases a lot of stunning photography over a number of disciplines. Portraits, landscapes, abstracts… Navis embues them all with colour and finds great textures in whatever he shoots.
Just this last week Navis has announced a project titled Outliers, Vol 1: Iceland, in which he and (equally impressive photographer) Kim Holtermand will head to Iceland in October, alongside a film crew and hip-hop / electronica producer Deru. Together they’re going to travel and record their impressions of the places they find. Navis’s blogpost announcing the project includes a great-looking teaser video and an impressive list of musicians involved in the project – including personal favourite Loscil.
Iceland has occupied a special place in my heart since the first time I visited in 2008: it’s simply the most incredible place I’ve ever been. I’m excited to see what it looks like through Navis’s lens, and those of the other contributors. I’ve pledged a few dollars via Kickstarter to help make the idea a reality, and if you’re interested to do the same, or to learn more, you can click here.
